Chongqing Tianfu Coal Mine

“Indestructible” is set against the backdrop of the shutdown and abandonment of the Tian fu and Jiang bei coal mines in Chongqing. The work explores the disappearance of both individual and collective memories in the industrialization and urbanization process, following the farewell to an era dominated by carbon-based energy. The immense driving force of the era forces people forward, driven by economics and interests, like a raging fire burning everyone’s greed, compelling the indifferent abandonment of homes and memories.

Through performance video, the work attempts to recreate the past lives of the people in the mining areas, presenting a reconstruction of memory. The ruins of factories, broken machines, and abandoned facilities no longer symbolize labor, but rather stand as synonyms for loss and forgetfulness. These factories were once the scenes of our childhoods and the centers of countless lives, carriers of collective memory. However, as they disappear, individual and collective memories begin to drift and fracture. The once vibrant “Little Hong Kong” seems like a fleeting dream, sparkling briefly before collapsing in the torrent of time. In these desolate ruins, the work invites us to experience the coldness and dissolution brought about by the era, while re-examining identity, emotional belonging, and memory preservation in the processes of industrialization and commercialization.
